Appeal: A Little of Your Help Can Do Wonders!

Dear Friends, Brothers and Sisters, Comrades!

You might be aware of our educational initiatives under the aegis of Sanghati (Assam Coaching Center). We have been successfully running 3 small scale coaching centers catering to students of standard V - X (5th - 10th). Out of my involvement with the community, I have realized that the rural community with which we are working needs a little more from us. The fact that there is not a single good quality English Medium High School for a population of about 40,000 - 50,000 for the rural community of West Silchar in South Assam (India), speaks volumes. The community also realizes the need for a good school. But majority of the population living below poverty line ( with a daily income of less than $ 2 a day), can not afford run a good school on its own.

My realization here is that if we can partially fund a school, then the rest can be managed from the available community resources like collecting fees, donations, etc. According to a preliminary estimate, if we can provide an external assistance of about $6,000.00 (Rs 250,000.00) per year then a similar amount can be arranged from the community. So we would be able to start a decent quality school. This way we will develop a model of partially self-sustaining model thereby imparting a good quality education to the poor kids.

As far as the management is concerned, we have considerable set up. Further steps for setting the system can be discussed as per the requirement. I want your opinion, suggestions, help, and cooperation in this regard.

Result on Monthly Evaluation (May)

Once again, on behalf of Sanghati & Assam Coaching Center, I would like to share with you some good experiences and some not so good ones. In 3 centers, we have roughly 60 students from classes V to X. Out of the 60 students, some students have performed very well while some others have performed satisfactorily, although there are still some with results below our expectations. The following gives a highlight of the result.
Highlights:

  • 90% - 100%: 2 Students
  • 80% - 89%: 10 Students
  • 70% - 79%: 4 Students
  • 60% - 69%: 7 Students
  • 49% - 59%: 6 Students

Please contact us for the details. We hope to improve gradually. Please remember us (Assam Coaching Center - as a team) in your prayers and your donations.

A Brief Overview of the Ongoing Activities

Assam Coaching Center was launched on January 13 in the debilitated Dakhin Seuti Rahmatia ME Madrassa. The tireless effort of the ACC to better the performance of some of the most underserved children has brought about some small but significant positive results.

Out of 21 students from classes V through VII (taking 7 students from each class), students from Class VII have shown the most significant progress with 4 students scoring more than 60% (first division) which is a marked change from the initial point where we started.

Class VI also showed a good performance with 3 students securing more than 60% while the remaining 4 are also making progress which is evident from their improvement. However, performance of Class V is a bit low as compared to the other two classes.

Launching of the 3rd Coaching Center

I am pleased to announce that we have launched another, the 3rd, coaching center. The 3rd batch of coaching classes has been operational since March 2011. Like the other two previous centers, our new batch will have 20 highly motivated high school students from lower income families. And they will receive partial tuition assistance and scholarships.
